Hand-embroidered cushions and stationery from independent shops around the world at Newt in Kingston, opened in the Stockade District in 2022.
Newt, a portmanteau of need and want, opened in the summer of 2022 in one of Uptown Kingston's 17th-century Stockade District buildings. Cindi Blondell and Carolyn Johnson, married in 2016 at Stone Tavern Farm in Roxbury, spent years traveling for advertising work and shopping the independent stores they found along the way. They moved to Kingston in 2020 and opened Newt two years later to bring that same feeling of discovery home.
The shelves are dense and colorful with hand-embroidered cushions from the Senegalese collective CSAO, playing cards and stationery, papier-mache tissue boxes, stylish fire extinguishers, books, jewelry, and objects that are more useful than they look and better-looking than they need to be.
