Victor C. Waryas Park stretches along nine acres of Hudson River shoreline in downtown Poughkeepsie, between the Mid-Hudson Bridge and the Walkway Over the Hudson. Named for Victor Waryas, Poughkeepsie's mayor from 1960 to 1964 and later a state assemblyman, the park carries a civic name without attached drama.
The park's three-part mosaic whale sculpture (which we can climb on) nods to the brief whaling era of the early 1800s, when Poughkeepsie's docks shipped whale products before the city's economy shifted to mills and factories along the Fall Kill.
