Montgomery Place Orchards in Red Hook grows antique apples on land farmed since 1802, including Hidden Rose and Esopus Spitzenburg.
Doug and Talea Fincke have spent decades growing here, and their son Adam and his wife Caroline are steadily taking on more of the work, carrying the farm into its 40th season. Around 60 varieties of antique and heirloom apples grow in these rows, many impossible to find in a supermarket: Black Twig, Hidden Rose (the flesh is shockingly pink when you cut into it), Coe's Golden Drop, and two of Thomas Jefferson's own favorites, Newtown Pippin and Esopus Spitzenburg. The lineup shifts by the week depending on what's ripe, so a visit in late September turns up different apples than one in mid-October.
