The Paramount opened June 17, 1930, one of the last of the great movie palaces built before the Depression closed out that era. Theater architects George and Charles Rapp designed it for Paramount's Publix chain. It seated nearly 1,500 people in its first run as a movie house; renovations over the decades brought that down to roughly 1,050. A restoration from 2007 to 2010 recreated the original ceiling murals and replastered the ornate walls rather than modernizing them away.
