Ellen Shapiro and Barry Samuels opened the Golden Notebook in a former pharmacy on Tinker Street in 1978, naming it after the Doris Lessing novel. For 32 years they ran it as an independent fixture, for a while adding a dedicated children's store next door and a small press, before closing in 2010 as e-book sales cut into bookstores everywhere. The shop didn't stay closed long: Jacqueline Kellachan, a former epidemiologist, bought it and reopened it that same October after a quick renovation. In 2015, James Conrad, who'd run the Woodstock Wool Company and bought the building itself, took on half the business alongside her.
