Bonticou Crag in New Paltz is a 20-minute scramble to a knife-edge summit with the Shawangunk Ridge and Catskills dropping away on each side.
Bonticou Crag starts easy: a blue-blazed trail through meadow and hardwood forest from the Spring Farm parking lot. About a mile in, the red-blazed Bonticou Ascent Path breaks off. The next twenty minutes are hands-on climbing up boulder fields and rock ledges, with a few exposed moves that require steady footing more than strength. A bypass trail skips the scramble if you're hiking with someone who'd rather not, but the scramble is the reason most people are here.
