Water Street Market is New Paltz's town square: a cluster of restored historic buildings organized as a pedestrian shopping village, with courtyards and garden spaces threading between them. Roughly two dozen independently owned shops and eateries fill the space: antiques dealers, vintage clothing, art galleries, jewelry, a wine bar, a couple of cafes.
Programming built into the grounds is what brings people back repeatedly. The Denizen Theatre runs arthouse and independent films Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, and its Summer Shorts festival, now in its fourth year, draws people from outside the county.
