DENIZEN sits above a storefront in Water Street Market, New Paltz's small courtyard of shops off Main Street, in a black-box room that seats around 40 to 50 people depending on the night. Film screenings run Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30, one carefully chosen feature each week: a documentary, a foreign film, something that skipped the multiplex entirely. Most weeks bring a filmmaker or documentary subject in for a post-show conversation, a film historian to set up the picture beforehand, or a short live set before the lights go down. Craft beer, wine, cider, and soft drinks are available before, during, and after, and the room is small enough that a Wednesday night here feels more like a gathering than an outing.
