Mountain Brauhaus in Gardiner, near New Paltz: three generations of one German family since 1955, and sauerbraten that outlasted its $1.75 price.
The Mountain Brauhaus started as the Sugar Bowl, a burger stand at the corner of Routes 299 and 44/55, opened by Emil Ruoff who'd emigrated from southern Germany in 1917. Emil's cooks kept slipping in dishes from home, and by 1955, the year the restaurant now counts as its founding, the German menu had taken over completely. Emil sold the place to his brother Eugen and wife Rosa in 1963; their son John ran it with Margarete, a German immigrant he met working there, until his death in 2017. Now Mark Ruoff, his wife Veronica, his sister Ilka, and her husband Kevin Casey, the executive chef since 2002, own and operate it, three generations in.
